They lay on a blanket together beside the fire, cuddling not just for warmth, but to enjoy the body of a person that truly enjoyed being beside them.

“For three years,” Yvain said, “I’ve had this curse. And, for the first time, I truly felt complete.”

“I’ve had to hide this for two years,” Alix said, “but for the first time I felt I could truly be myself.”

And, for the first time, they didn’t curse the Sorceress Bietrix that had touched both their lives so drastically.

Perhaps someday, they would confront Mistress Bietrix. And, perhaps someday, they would return to their lives as God had made them.

But, for now, even for the rest of their ride, they are content.

As they ride, Alix speaks.

“You know, as the fourth daughter and seventh child, all that’s asked is a noble marriage,” Alix said. “You’re a knight of the realm, with a noble name and reputation.”

“Oh?” Yvain replied, “Why do you mention this?”

“Your brother’s son will continue your family line. One of my brothers will hold our castle. And in my current condition, I doubt any man would want me. Nor would any woman want you.”

“Aye,” Yvain grunted outwardly, but smiled on the inside. “Would you take my hand and be my bride?”

“I would be your partner. We still have adventures to complete. And maybe we might find Mistress Bietrix,” Alix said.

“We may.” Yvain’s eyes focused on the road ahead.

“Or we may not,” Yvain thought, “And I’m ok with that."

"I’m ok with this.”
