Payton Pritchard vs Grant Williams
In my opinion one of Brad’s most underrated move this offseason was not matching Grant’s 4 year 54M dollar contract. Instead he traded him to Dallas which netted us a nice 6.2TPE and 2 2nd round picks. (One of which is the 2024 Spurs pick which should be in the 31-35 range this year).
Just as interesting a move was after that he instead extended PP to a 4 year 30M dollar contract extension. Almost half of what Grant is getting paid.
So I figured halfway into the season let’s take a quick look at the stats and advanced stats to see how they are doing this year.
PP Grant
MPG 20.8 26.7
GP. 39 36
PPG 8 8.2
RPG 3.2 3.6
APG 3 1.6
SPG 0.4 0.4
BPG 0.1. 0.7
TOPG 0.6. 1.1
FG% 42.9% 41.5%
FT% 75.9%. 69%
3P% 37.5% 37.3%
20ptgames 4 1
Off rating 122.8 112.3
Def rating 110.8 118.8
Net rating 10 -6.5
PP is matching or exceeding Grant’s stat in nearly every category even while playing significantly less minutes. Even their rebounds per game are close.
As for their advanced stats it’s not even close. PP is 22nd in the entire league for best net rating while Grant is near the bottom of the league in net rating.
All this isn’t to bash Grant as he was an excellent leader and locker room guy during his time with our team. But it really puts into perspective what a brilliant move it was to not matching Grant’s contract and getting assets. While showing what a bargain PP’s contract has the potential to be.
