question about crew

Hey yall, I've never bought crew before but I really like the Ares skin so I'm thinking about it. I see where you can get different versions of the skin the more months you are subscribed and I was wondering if these have to be consecutive months or if I'm able to cancel my subscription and then upgrade the skin later by subscribing again in a few months time?
