Whats the Appeal of Modern AU's?

Specifically of mythical, historical, or otherwise fantastical fandoms how come people love to rewrite the characters as just normal people so much. Absolutely no hate at all write what you wanna write but it always confused me. Like take for example a "smaller" fandom (Bridgerton) and I use the word smaller relatively. But look at its tags fic count of over 20K, but by simply excluding the Modern-day/Era AU tags you jump down closer to 15k now while thats only 5k fics on a sitw with millions its a decent chunk of this fandom as I'm sure it is for others. For me when I read its kinda an escape to remove myself as much as possible from the bs of the real world but ik that its not like that for everyone. I suppose I'm just asking to the people who do enjoy these works what about it is interesting to you? Do you think it helps you relate and connect more with these characters and their stories? Or is it something else that I'm totally missing?
