Episode 7 is just about Caine seeking acceptance?
Anyone else notice that the past few Adventures in The Amazing Digital Circus are about Caine trying to find acceptance? Ever since Zooble told Caine that no one likes his adventures, Caine has seemed to act out more and more to prove to them that his Adventures mean something. From the Suggestion Box, to the Favorite Character Award, Caine has been trying and failing to win over the affections of those trapped in the circus. In hindsight, I almost feel the latest episode is one last desperate attempt for Caine to prove to himself that he is valued for what he does. Throughout the episode, there is this subtle undercurrent of Caine's continual need for validation, Able himself giving hints as to why they should care about him. In order to get the keys, Jax has to have a one-on-one with him to tell him how much he's appreciated. In the last moments of the episode, they have to choose whether to close down the circus or stay there with him. He seems to believe they'd choose to stay, but I wonder if a part of him knows that none of them want to be there any longer. Even back at the Favorite Character Award, there seems to be something in him that knows everyone would rather choose Ming than him.
I feel throughout the series, Caine is starting to see more and more that his adventures, though the only thing to keep them entertained, is a constant reminder of this place they don't want to be a part of, he is failing at the very thing he's made for, and nobody really cares that he exists. He doesn't have someone to talk to like everyone else, and maybe this last adventure was almost like a cry for help. He was trying so hard to get others to show that he's appreciated, but he only caused them to resent him more.
Of course, I could be wrong about all this, perhaps Caine is just a normal narcissist with delusions of grandeur, who cannot possibly comprehend that anyone could dislike him, but I almost feel there is more to him than that.
This past episode may seem like a waste of time, that everything it was building up toward just came crashing down, rendering the entire episode meaningless, but it feels like this episode has greater importance than we know yet, like the meaningless is the point. And maybe it's deeper than that, because something in Caine has been beginning to slip, and maybe this all has led to the last straw. Again, Caine could simply be oblivious to everything, but I think deep down, he's aware he is only an unloved AI, and I'm hoping we get to see how that all comes down in the final two episodes.
