[World Trope] Apocalypse In Name Only
Lately become enamored with apocalypse stories that, instead of focusing on how badly the old world screwed up, focus on how people keep living life.
Fallout 3, Megaton: Not the biggest Fallout 3 fan, but the series has some great examples of this (even if the greater plot is usually focused on the whole “war never changes”) but places like diamond city and Megaton always had such a great vibe to me, the world is grimy and ruined but people still live, sell drinks and make food and carry on.
Death Stranding, Timefall Porter: Death stranding is such a weird game but seeing people adapt to the timefall and find ways to make use of it and just start a new beer, considering how many guys seem to try doing homebrews, making beer in the apocalypse feels very human.
BotW: I think breath of the wild encapsulates this vibe very well, I’m not an expert on Zelda lore but it’s quite possibly one of the most dire points in the series and there remains people exploring the new world, venturing across the desert, and running normal settlements.
In general I think post apocalypse stories tend to be very focused on the mistakes of the past rather than how an apocalypse is a chance for a new world to grow.
