Why schedule maintenance in the middle of an event?

Is there a reason the dev's didn't schedule this maintenance outside the time slot for academy crate? Will the event deadline be extended to accommodate for downtime? Because if not, then the event has now been cut short by 8 hours and is essentially over.

I'm in the US. I was hoping to use my one day off to try and rack up crystals. Sort of feels like a slap in the face.
