Covid-19 Deaths on the Decline

First, a disclaimer. This is not an argument against the lock-downs, against wearing masks, or social distancing. This is an argument in favor of hope, optimism, and perspective.

According to the data site, the Worldometer, Covid-19 cases have been on the rise, but deaths have been on the decline as states have been reopening in the U.S.

I hadn't heard of the Worldometer before, so I did a little digging. I fact checked with CDC website, and I found the same data.

Covid-19 deaths peaked around mid April, and have been on the decline all the way through June 20th (the latest date that the site had data for). I haven't looked into it yet, but there are several possible reasons for this that I can think of. One is that cases have increased as testing has increased. Another is that the virus itself could be becoming less deadly as it mutates. Or possibly, medical professionals are getting better at treating it.

Another interesting data point is the number of Covid-19 deaths per million in the U.S. It is 377 currently. That includes New York which takes what would otherwise be a much lower number, and skews it upwards. Still that puts the U.S. deaths per million lower than that of the U.K., France, Spain, Italy, and Sweden.

The point here is that we are doing better than we think we are. We are making progress. And if we renew our commitment to support each other in getting through this together, we can make it.
