Including Other People in Profile Pictures

I know the general advice of not including pictures with others in the first photo, so they know which one is you; but also having photos with others in your other pictures so people know you actually can be friends with people (especially if they're photos with the gender you're looking to date).

But, I always feel a little uncomfortable with it, since I don't ask my friends in those photos if I can use them in my profile. I also don't know how I'd feel if someone used a photo with me in it in their dating profile, also because I'm much more of a private person. I guess I could ask them, but that would be an awkward conversation to have.

What are your thoughts?
