How do you analyze sector data with save files?

Specifically, I am interested in knowing exactly how many planets of \_\_ condition % are present in the sector. Does anyone know how to go about doing that?

Is it as simple as opening the campaign.xml or the descriptor.xml and searching for a certain term or is it more complicated than that?
