Halfway done with One Piece (opinions so far)
About a month ago I posted that I began reading One Piece and now I am at chapter 515. I wanted to give a quick review about I feel about the story and characters.
One Piece is one of the best stories I've ever read, I absolutely love the world that Oda created, though I also have a couple major issues
The good:
The setting is amazing and feels so real. We are shown so much about this world through great writing and good dialogue. I got an amazing idea of the landscape of the East blue with only a couple metions of the world. The Grand line feels mysterious yet adventurous, it feels dangerous yet it still makes sense why there are so many pirates on it. I even feel like I know so much about the West Blue with just a couple metions here and there.
The character interactions are great, they feel like real people and real friends. I love all the little interactions on each page, they cry when they lose a member, they are weary about some people joining, they are also capable of letting someone go if they have to. I feel the feelings of the characters, I agreed with Usopp and Zoro at the same time, at no point do these characters feel one sided they all have thier opinions and I agreed with most of them.
I love the government in one piece, it feels so real. They are corrupt, yet there are also nice ones. They do whatever they have to do they stop the Straw Hats, yet they also let them go. It feels real, I love the idea of the 7 warlords of the sea. The idea of pirates who have sided with the government but dont follow the rules of the Navy is brilliant, the Navy is just another part of the world that I love
Theres so many other small things that I love but I want to make this quick so I'll just quickly talk about the one thing I hate
The Devil Fruit:
In the beginning of One Piece the Devil Fruits were a great idea, they were said to be a rare fruit that goes for billions of berries. I loved that, they seemed powerful yet incredibly rare, but as the story went on they just felt more and more common. Everyone they ran into had a Devil fruit, they 7 warlords and the navy make sense, but than animals started having Devil Fruit powers, weapons had them, almost every pirate had them, like 4 people on drum island have them, somehow the Sky people got some. They just dont feel as rare as they were said to be. I am told it gets better but where I am in the story it's still a huge issue to me
The Characters:
Luffy- Luffy is absolutely amazing, hes air headed and glutinous but hes kind hearted and loyal to his friends. Hes a great warrior but because his friends and desires push him to be, he never gives up and always trusts everyone. While his dumbness can be annoying, his kind heart and happy nature make up for it.
Zoro/Zolo- Zoro is also amazing, I love his calm nature and love for the blade. I also love that he does all that he does for a simple promise for a dead friend, I also love how much he loves the sword. I can connect with his Loyalty to Luffy and his cool head in dangerous situations. His reactions to Usopp wanting to rejoin the crew was amazing and absolutely brilliant writing
Nami- Nami is a wholesome cinnamon bun. I love her greediness and how she's open to do anything for money. While she can be stubborn for no reason she's still a great character with a amazing backstory
Usopp- I like Usopps cowardace yet it got pretty annoying at times leaving me to be annoyed by him instead of finding him funny UNTIL Water 7. His story was amazing, I loved his fight with Luffy as it was clear he regretted fighting luffy and saying what he was saying as it was happening. Every moment with Sniper King was great and his cowardace became way more bearable. I loved all his fights and I absolutely cheered when he burnt the navy flag. He got even better in Thriller Bark, his jokes were amazing and his pessimism made me understand his prior cowardace better. He is now my favorite straw hat (currently)
Sanji- While I enjoy his hot headedness and ability to slip through the cracks of all the antagonists. He has so many badass scenes and funny moments BUT his love for women gets old, annoying, and is not funny. While it was small at first it got worst and worst, than he started showing a more pervy nature to the point of him saying he wanted a devil fruit to spy on women in Thriller Bark. I still enjoy him but he is currently my least favorite straw hat.
Chopper- Chopper is funny and cute and I love his passion for helping people with injuries. He had one of the best backstories and I loved every second of his home town Drum Island. He was great in Enies Lobby and Thriller bark, though I dont like that we have a second coward character in him. And his monster form is bad ass.
Nico Robin- Great character, I loved her arc from Alabasta to Enies lobby. Her story made me sad and I loved seeing her say "I want to live". It felt earned and added so much to the character. I also love how happy she is around the straw hats and Chopper in particular. She's also very cool headed and very funny at times, great characters
Frankie- A great character, I love that he cries at ant mildly sad line or story. Hes funny and I love the idea of a Cyborg pirate, not too much to say about him yet nut hes still great
Brook- I dont have a lot to say about him as hes just joined recently. He just feels like a blend of all the characters. I love his dumb puns bit he definitely doesn't feel too original.
One Piece is great and I cant wait to finish it
