Point defenseless

Here’s something i’ve noticed in every star trek show. When the enemy ship fires torpedoes, the crew obviously shout that enemy missiles are coming to tear them a new one, but they can’t get a ship’s phaser to shoot down the enemy missile? For being technologically more advanced than us, that’s a very stupid oversight. Ever heard of CIWS? Comes real handy in situations like that.

For pete’s sake, the navy has ships built to shoot down enemy missiles before they can get too close. We have the Patriot missile system and other types of anti-ballistic missiles to shoot down enemy ballistic missiles. By the end of the second world war, warships could put up a ridiculous amount of anti-air fire, you’d have to be declared insane to try and fight thru all that.

In BSG(2003 version) and Space Battleship Yamato, the hero ships swat down enemy missiles like it’s nothing. And the only way to destroy the ships, let alone scratch the paint, is to overwhelm the defenses with massive waves of missiles and other weaponry.

It just makes me cringe when i see the bridge crew shout ‘enemy photon torpedoes incoming’ and just let the torpedo blast a new hole in the ship. If the ship’s computer is fast enough to detect an enemy missile heading towards you, it can certainly bring a phaser cannon to blow it to pieces.
